It may seem like under the radar news but you can have Blizzard‘s smash hit Overwatch appear on the Switch, or well in truth… at least stream it onto the device.
There are a few tricks to being able to play the game on other devices, one being to use an app called Rainway , which allows PC gamers to stream to other devices that run DirectX 11. But given that the Switch monitor only serves as a display, players would still have to use a mouse and keyboard to control the characters. This means that any reports of Overwatch being available on the Switch aren’t as clear cut and probably have resulted in a lot of excited and then disappointed fans.
Overwatch game director Jeff Kaplan has not given much strength to any rumors that Overwatch would be properly ported for Nintendo’s new console – “Getting OW on the Switch is very challenging for us,” he said. “But we’re always open minded about exploring possible platforms.”
He elaborated more in an interview with the UK’s Express newspaper – “I think the problem is we’ve really targeted our min spec in a way that we would have to revisit performance and how to get on that platform” he said.
Maybe one day we’ll have Overwatch on the Switch…maybe one day
So for now Overwatch is grounded to its existing platforms which won’t be a dent to the games performance, sales or fanfare, but it would have been a massive boost to allowing Nintendo a real step into the world of eSports. But we have a feeling that there will still be a few options and games coming out that allow for that to expand.
