London Spitfire, named after a World War 2 aircraft, has been announced as one of 12 city-based teams from around the world competing in the official Overwatch league, which stretches to Asia, Europe, and North America
According to Blizzard: “”The Supermarine Spitfire was the name of a British fighter plane that was flown in the Royal Air Force, most famously during the Battle of Britain in World War 2”
The news even garnished attention from Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, who said: “London leads the world in creativity and cutting-edge technology and the city’s games and esports industry plays a major part in that success. Good luck to all those representing the capital on the London Spitfire team in the Overwatch League.”
The team’s logo is in the form of a badge, which Cloud9 President, Dan Fiden says, “mimics the style of a lot of Premier League football clubs“. As this is a Cloud8 based team, they had thought of picking names that drew inspiration from Cloud like themes, such as London Fog or the London Tempest, but Spitfire definitely sounds like a progressive, dominant name for a team with their sights aimed high.
